Exchange 2003:  Log File Explosion!!!
We had a situation yesterday where a corrupted recurring calendar entry in a users mailbox was causing our Exchange 2003 Sp2 server to generate 140 log files per minute. When the user would sync their mailbox with their local .ost (cached mode), the log growth would occur. This eventually caused our stores to dismount. We analyzed the logs, removed the calendar entry, and did a re-sync with the user. Everything is now fine.My question: Is there a fix for this? I would suspect that there is a check for this sort of RACE Condition.Server: Exchange 2003 SP2 Enterprise, active-passive cluster.Client: Outlook 2003 Build 11.0.8200.0Thank you, AndyAMG

I would make sure you have the latest Outlook 2003 hotfixes applied:At minimum:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958701The storage group log file on the server that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 grows exponentially until the storage group fails because of a lack of disk space. This problem may occur when an Outlook 2003 user synchronizes the user's mailbox with the Exchange Server. When you run the OST Integrity Check Tool (Scanost.exe), the tool indicates that the user's .ost file is corrupted. In fact, read Mike's blog entry for more good ideas to help prevent it in the future:http://blogs.technet.com/mikelag/archive/2009/07/12/troubleshooting-store-log-database-growth-issues.aspx

Hi,When we have corrupt item in mailbox,it could cause sync issue, creating a lot of transaction logs and eventually the disk space that the logs sit on runs out and then the databases dismount.Irecommend you to monitor the event log especailly for those calendar corruptionevent. Alsowe can run ExBPA to get more information to troubleshoot the issue. For the issue,we can use MFCmapi.exe to delete the corrupt item.Regards,Xiu

Next time when you suspect such issues. you can track down easily using below utility and avoid the looping condition in exchange org. Using the Microsoft Exchange Server User Monitor (ExMon) tool http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Microsoft-Exchange-Server-User-Monitor.html Vinod |CCNA|MCSE 2003 +Messaging|MCTS|ITIL V3|
